Osechi is the traditional meal only prepared for New Year.

All of the Ingredients in Osechi are well-meaning. Because Osechi is eaten to pray for good health and great harvest for a year.

Sticky-Rice Cakes called Mochi is made of glutinous rice pounded into paste and molded into shape. Mochi is a traditional food for the Japanese New Year and is commonly sold and eaten during that time. Mochi is eaten to celebrate good health and long life. We eat Mochi in a Zouni soup celebrating Japanese New Year. There is a couple of ways to eat Mochi, such as Kinako Mochi coated with a mixture of kinako (roasted soybean flour) and sugar.

Black beans are eaten to encourage work and academic achievement. Because the shape of the shrimp is like an old man, people eat them to pray for longevity. The Konbu rolls are eaten to wish for fertility and family prosperity. The Kazunoko is eaten to pray for the prosperity of descendants. The kurikinton raises money luck. The sweet omelet is one of the ingredients in Osechi to wish to improve knowledge.
